Maria is a grade 1 student who currently uses Braille writing for most of her learning, but who complements materials with soundtracks. She has had great success in first class and has often been praised for her amazing memory. Mary could often literally quote stories and quickly answered each of the teacher`s questions. It is now the end of the second class, and Maria`s teacher is quite concerned about her difficulties in understanding the stories. Mary is able to provide many concrete details about the stories. Although it can list the names of different people in history, as well as concrete measures, it cannot say why a particular action took place or what is the overall content of the story. For example, when Mary reads a story about elephants and the problems they experience in captivity, she can only understand that elephants often occur in circuses. It is feared that Mary has a specific learning disability. Other studies have shown that abstract thinkers are more likely to take risks than concrete thinkers. This may be partly explained by the idea that concrete thinkers, who are more interested in «how» rather than «why,» may be deterred from starting a risky task, as they focus more on practical task-related efforts, while the abstract thinker may be more concerned with the benefits and disadvantages of risk. Abstract thinking is the ability to reflect on objects, principles and ideas that do not physically exist. It refers to symbolic thinking that uses the replacement of a symbol for an object or idea. Sometimes the ability to imagine, predict and create connections affects the proper functioning.
Bacon used and encouraged induction as a tool of abstraction and responded to the old deductive-thinking approach that had dominated the intellectual world since the days of Greek philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander and Aristotle. Thales (624-546 BC) believed that everything in the universe came from a major substance, water. He directed or clarified a general idea, «everything is water,» to specific forms of water such as ice, snow, fog and rivers. An abstraction can be considered a compression process in which several data from different components are assigned to a single piece of abstract data; based on similarities in the constituent data, for example. B, many different physical cats classify abstraction as «CAT.»
